Around 2.3 million people take the TOEFL exam every year. These students are trying to achieve big, important life goals, such as being granted a visa to work abroad, getting hired for their dream job, or getting admission to their top choice university. Succeeding on the TOEFL is often the one thing standing in their way.
TOEFL students are often willing to pay more for a teacher they trust to help them get the results they need. The stakes are high! TOEFL test-takers often have tight deadlines to meet and need to achieve a specific score before it’s too late. This creates a sense of urgency and strong motivation to hire the RIGHT teacher - at any cost.
The TOEFL exam is the most widely-accepted English language test in the world. Over 13,000 universities and other organizations accept or require TOEFL scores in 160 countries. And now, with the convenience of online teaching, it’s easier than ever for teachers and students to connect and work together around the globe.
Are you ready to become one of them?
I’m not familiar with the content of the exam. It would take forever to learn enough about every section and task on the test to be able to confidently teach it.
I’m not a good test-taker myself. I never did well on those big exams at school and always get test-taking anxiety. So how could I ever help students with test prep?
Teaching exam prep is technical and boring. It’s just droning on about multiple-choice questions and rigid essay structures. And the topics are so academic and dry!
TOEFL students have unrealistic expectations. They want a top score with just a few weeks of preparation - but that’s just not possible. How do I tell them that?
You could let all of this stuff hold you back from the next level of your teaching career.
Or you could learn everything you need to know quickly and easily with…
A brand new course in which I’ve compiled my best TOEFL-teaching strategies, course plans, lesson plans, materials, and everything else you need to know about the ins and outs of the exam.
You’ll start with a thorough introduction to the TOEFL exam, including exactly what’s required, how it’s scored, what students need to know and do on each section, and how to how to help students with the overwhelming nature of the exam.
You’ll learn all about the TOEFL reading section, including how to help students deal with long, challenging academic texts that are often very dry. You’ll get ideas for reading practice exercises (even how to format these for online lessons!) and strategies for how to help students with unknown words and tricky questions.
You’ll learn key strategies for helping students with the TOEFL listening section, including both the lecture and conversation tasks. Learn what to do if students don’t understand part of the audio or aren’t sure how to answer a question. You’ll also get advice for helping students take useful notes and improve their comprehension abilities.
You’ll learn how to help students with an entirely new type of speaking: recording their responses on a computer while the timer menacingly ticks down on the screen in front of them. But it doesn’t have to be scary! You’ll learn all the strategies you need to help students feel confident in each of the four TOEFL speaking tasks.
You’ll learn an essential brainstorming technique that will make a huge difference in students’ performance on the writing portion of the exam. I’ll also share my recommended structure and useful language for both writing tasks - with plenty of interactive practice activities. Psssst! The writing section just happens to be my specialty!
Got a student that’s still having trouble - maybe running out of time or still struggling with a particular section, despite using the strategies from the previous modules you’ve taught them? Or maybe you have a student with crazy-unrealistic expectations about their timeline and score. This module will help you troubleshoot everything from test-taking nerves to task strategy back-up plans to timeline logistics.
When I had the chance to teach my very first TOEFL prep lesson nearly 15 years ago, I had no idea what I was doing. In fact, I was so clueless about the exam that after a few weeks of working together, the student chose not to continue. Ugh - that was embarrassing.
But that was my big wake-up call that teaching exam prep is very different than teaching general English. I set out on a mission to learn everything I possibly could about the TOEFL exam so that I would never let a student down again.
I scoured the internet for information, practice tests, strategies, and advice. I invested in two different books full of actual TOEFL practice tests and a phone book-sized volume of "complete TOEFL skill practice." I dug deep and really did my homework.
When I felt ready, I started taking on TOEFL prep students again. I developed, adapted, and perfected my new TOEFL knowledge and skills through hours and hours of group and one-to-one prep classes.
As I continued to refine my approach, I realized that I could apply relevant techniques from my own academic background - including strategies that have helped me excel on other standardized tests - and I started to develop unique shortcuts and methodology that improved my students' scores dramatically. These are my best-kept TOEFL secrets. And now, I’m opening my TOEFL vault and sharing it all with you!
